In today’s world, women’s self-defence is more than just a skill it’s a necessity. Research shows that many women feel unsafe walking alone, particularly at night. While we continue to call for safer communities, it’s equally important that women feel confident, strong, and prepared to protect themselves if needed.
That’s where karate comes in.
At Simon Coope Karate School, we believe every woman deserves to feel empowered and in control. Our women-led self-defence training focuses on practical techniques, body awareness, and confidence — all within a positive, supportive community. Whether your goal is to feel safer, learn something new, or simply get active, karate offers an effective and uplifting path forward.
Unlike many assumptions about self-defence, karate doesn’t rely on size or strength. It’s based on timing, technique, and using your opponent’s energy against them — making it especially suitable for women of all ages and fitness levels.
Here’s why karate is a powerful choice for women:
It’s not about strength – Techniques use momentum, precision, and evasion, not muscle power.
It builds awareness – You’ll learn how to spot danger early, stay calm, and make clear decisions.
It develops resilience – Regular training builds mental and physical confidence to act under pressure.
Our women’s self-defence classes are led by experienced female instructors like Sensei Hannah Mott (3rd Dan) and Sensei Laura Silver (2nd Dan) — inspiring martial artists who lead with both strength and empathy.
Karate isn’t about memorising fancy routines — it’s about learning movements you can rely on if needed. In our self-defence sessions, women learn how to:
Target vulnerable areas like the knees, groin, or throat
Break free from grabs and holds using simple, instinctive techniques
Use footwork and positioning to stay safe and balanced
Block, strike, and evade with confidence and control
All techniques are practised safely and gradually, helping you build confidence as your ability grows.
While self-defence is the focus, the wider benefits of karate can be life-changing:
Improved fitness – Boost your strength, coordination, and stamina in each session
Lower stress and anxiety – Focused breathing and movement calm the mind
Better posture and body language – You’ll carry yourself with more presence and self-belief
A positive, empowering community – Learn alongside others in a welcoming space
Karate doesn’t just help you feel safer — it helps you feel stronger inside and out.
Not all self-defence classes are created equal. Here’s what to look for when choosing the right one:
✅ Qualified instructors – Our classes are taught by black belts with real-world teaching experience.
✅ Female leadership – Role models like Sensei Hannah and Sensei Laura understand women’s safety concerns.
✅ Safe, inclusive space – We prioritise respect, inclusion, and encouragement.
✅ Structured learning – Our syllabus supports steady growth with clear goals.
✅ Safeguarding in place – Fully insured, DBS-checked, and family-friendly.

What we’ll cover: Light warm-up, breathing drills, and easy strikes and blocks.
Who you’ll meet: A supportive mix of beginners and experienced women, guided by caring instructors.
You don’t need to be fit or flexible. You just need to start.
How often should I attend classes?
Starting with 1–2 classes a week is ideal. You’ll build consistency, confidence, and stamina without pressure.
Do I need to be fit to start?
No — our classes cater to all fitness levels. You’ll gradually improve strength and fitness as you train.
What equipment do I need?
Just comfy clothes to begin. If you continue, we can help you get your own gi (uniform) from the club.
Is there an age limit?
Not at all. We have students in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond. It’s never too late to start.
Will I have to spar or fight?
Only if you want to. Beginners start with non-contact drills and controlled exercises focused on technique, not combat.
