FAQs

Q. What shall I wear to my first class?

A. Just turn up in loose clothing (i.e., joggers, t shirt). You won’t be wearing socks or shoes for the class and you will probably be too hot for a hoodie! If you decide to carry on your lessons with us after the free trial, gis are available to purchase from your instructor.

Q. Will it be easy to understand what's happening in my first class?

A. As we are a traditional Japanese-style karate club, our instructors do teach in Japanese language. However, don’t panic! Everything is repeated in English and all techniques are demonstrated. You’re going to feel lost for a start, but even the highest standard of black belts were white belts once.

Q. When can I get my next belt?

A. Gradings are held once every three months. This is when you will take a formal practical exam to see if you’re ready for your next belt. These gradings can be difficult, but if you attend regularly and put in the work you will find yourself progressing quickly!

Q. What are syllabus courses and do I need to attend them?

A. Syllabus courses are held once a month on Sundays. They are available for everyone to attend. They usually last for two hours and within this time each belt/grade will have a dedicated instructor taking you through everything you need for your next grading. We do expect everyone to attend when possible as you can quickly fall behind your peers if you don’t stay up to grading standard!

Q. What is a license?

A. Every student will be issued with a license book. This is essentially your karate passport! It is your insurance with the club, as well as a place to record all the additional courses you attend and all your gradings. It is really important that every member of the club has one.
