Simon Coope Karate School

Gradings & Belt System

As a club, we hold ‘gradings’ every 3 months – this is the exam every student must take in order to earn their next belt. Gradings are a formal event designed to put the students under pressure in preparation for real-world situations, such as school exams or job interviews. If the student can demonstrate their required syllabus at the date of the grading, they will be rewarded their next belt and a certificate on the day!

At Simon Coope Karate School, we follow a traditional Wado-Ryu ranking system of belts. These belts start from 10th Kyu (white belt), which you earn automatically when you join us, and progress to the Dan grades (black belts).

The order of belts are as follows:

  • 9th Kyu – Red
  • 8th Kyu – Yellow
  • 7th Kyu – Orange
  • 6th Kyu – Green
  • 5th Kyu – Blue
  • 4th Kyu – Purple
  • 3rd Mon – White/Brown Stripe
  • 3rd Kyu – Brown
  • 2nd Mon – Brown/Red Stripe
  • 2nd Kyu – Brown/White Stripe
  • 1st Mon – White/Black Stripe
  • 1st Kyu – Brown/Black Stripe
  • 1st-10th Dan – Black Belt

Fees vary dependent on the grade being taken. Please refer to the price list or speak to Simon to confirm the price of student’s next grading.
