Simon Coope Karate School

Why Join Karate?

Whether you’re thinking of trying something new, looking for something to fill your evenings or got an energetic child who can’t decide what sport they want to try – karate is the answer!

The Benefits of Karate

Improve you Physical & Mental Health

Karate has many benefits, both physical and mental, with the most obvious being self-defense. The techniques taught at Simon Coope Karate School are rooted from the traditional wado-ryu style of the martial art and are applicable to real life and modern day situations. But there’s much more to karate than just self-defense – it is also a great all body workout that improves your fitness. In the class, you will be doing lots of stretching in the warm-ups and cardio in basics and kata. With consistent practice you will begin to notice improved muscle mass and definition, along with overall improved cardiovascular health, strength and agility; stretching will aid in your mobility and muscle fatigue for years to come. As well as this, regular training can significantly decrease your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

If physical health isn’t your main goal, exercise is proven to reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression, and karate is an excellent stress relief! The discipline and socialising that comes hand-in-hand with our karate club has shown us first hand the improvement on individuals’ motivation and overall mental health.

But karate is not just for adults with health goals – it is also great for children! Karate will impose a discipline on you AND your child that can’t be taught in classrooms. The dojo is a place of respect for the instructor, and messing around will not be tolerated. Karate can be a very dangerous sport so all students are held to the same standards of sensibility.

Great for Adults and Children

Karate Promotes Focus and Dedication

At SCKS we know how quickly children lose interest and want to try new things, just to drop them a week later… But karate is an excellent incentive that promotes focus and has proven incredibly useful for children both in and out of our club who have ADD, ADHD and ASD. With consistency there will be improvements that translate from the club into the classroom! In fact, a study using 2000 student participants has shown those who practiced karate regularly got 20% better exam results than those who took part in multi-sports.

A fantastic, inclusive karate school. I would recommend it to everyone, irrespective of age, experience, or ability. Having been a part of a different wado-ryu school previously, the main aspect that stands out to me about Simon's school is that he genuinely cares about his students both as individuals and as a part of the wider club - he is supportive but also encourages you to challenge yourself where necessary. The higher belt students are also really supportive and welcoming - the school is a very safe environment for all ages. And also a lot of fun!

Karate is not 'just for boys'!
