Tokyo, Japan – August 2025 – Members of Simon Coope Karate School proudly represented England at the Japanese Wadokai National Championships, held at the world-famous Nippon Budokan in Tokyo. The prestigious event brought together thousands of Wadokai karatekas from across Japan and around the world for a weekend celebrating skill, spirit, and tradition.
The championships took place over 15–16 August, followed by the International Wadokai Cup on 17 August – making it one of the most significant weekends in the global Wado calendar. Competitors ranged from elementary school students to senior karate practitioners, showcasing the true breadth and inclusivity of Wadokai karate.
The Japanese Wadokai National Championships is an annual highlight for karateka worldwide. Now in its 59th year, the tournament serves as Japan’s premier Wadokai competition – testing not only technical ability but also the discipline and harmony that lie at the heart of Wado Ryu philosophy.
In recent years, the event has opened its doors to international clubs, allowing athletes from overseas dojos to experience the unique atmosphere and world-class standards of competition that Japan has to offer.
Held at the Nippon Budokan, a historic martial arts arena originally built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the event symbolises the deep cultural heritage of karate in Japan – the birthplace of Wado Ryu.
For the Simon Coope Karate School team, competing in Japan was a huge honour and an unforgettable experience. Athletes trained intensively in the months leading up to the event – refining their kata, kumite, and timing to meet international standards.
Sensei Simon Coope (5th Dan) shared his pride in the team’s achievement:
“To compete at the Budokan is a dream come true for any karateka. Our students represented England with respect, determination, and true Wado Ryu spirit. It’s an incredible experience that deepens understanding of the art and connects us to the roots of karate itself.”
The event offered the opportunity to train, observe, and compete alongside some of the most skilled practitioners in the world – strengthening international friendships and reinforcing the shared values of discipline, respect, and humility.
Participation in the Japanese Wadokai National Championships goes beyond medals – it’s about cultural exchange and embodying the true essence of Wado Ryu: the way of peace and harmony.
Students from Simon Coope Karate School were able to witness Japan’s deep respect for martial arts tradition first-hand – from bowing etiquette to the precision of competition kata. These experiences are invaluable for any karateka and inspire continued growth and excellence within the Leicestershire dojos back home.
Following the championships, the Wadokai World Cup immediately took place – providing further opportunities for international teams to test their skills. Events like these help nurture the next generation of competitors – those who will go on to represent England and carry the principles of Wado Ryu across the world.
For Simon Coope Karate School, this trip marks not just a milestone in competition history – but a celebration of dedication, teamwork, and cultural connection.
